What to Bring

Bed linen, a duvet, pillow and mosquito net will be provided.

You will be able to purchase most goods in the area, however bring essential personal items as imported goods can be expensive.

Spring / Summer (Sept – Feb) is the rainy season when it will be extremely hot and humid.

Winter (May –July) will also be hot during the day, with temperatures dropping at night.

There is a washing machine on site, however this needs to be shared between volunteers and baby blankets/bed linen takes priority so please pack accordingly. Please note that the following equipment list is only a guide.

  •  Washable walking boots / trainers & Sandals , ‘Crocs’, or slops

They are going to get muddy, and have the laces chewed. Bring more than one pair of shoes.

  •  Long sleeve trousers and shirts

Insects can be a nuisance, especially after dark. This is also a malaria area so cool long sleeve shirts and trousers are recommended to offer the best form of protection in the evenings.

  •  Sweatshirt / Jersey

It can get VERY cold in the evenings during the winter months.

  •  ‘Work clothes’

Shorts and T-shirts – Neutral colours are preferable.  Your clothing will get “peed and pooed” on and you may not want to wear it again later so don’t bring your best! There is a “community chest” of clothing that has been left behind by other volunteers, which you are welcome to use. Work gloves / gardening gloves.

  •  Waterproof jacket for those visiting in summer
  • Swimming costume – note however, that you may NOT swim in the river due to crocodiles!
  • Towel
  • Torch (Flashlight)

A torch with a powerful beam and spare batteries / rechargeable – for looking around at night. (A penlight or headlamp type is not sufficient)

  •  Medical Kit

It is always useful to carry a small personal medical kit. This should include:

Personal medication to last the duration of the stay.

Mild pain killers (e.g. Paracetamol)

Band Aid – Sticking Plasters

Anti-histamine cream / tablets

Antibacterial cream – e.g. Bactroban

Imodium tablets and rehydration solution

Sun Cream

Insect / Mosquito Repellent

Malaria Tablets

  • Other Items (Non Essential)

Camera, film and batteries.

Penknife / Leather man

Binoculars

Books – We have a collection of paperback novels at the Centre that you can read and swap.
