Volunteering
CARE relies heavily on volunteers to assist with the day to day running of the sanctuary, and caring for the baby baboons in their first step of the rehabilitation programme.Typical daily tasks may include
- Playing with and moderating the baby baboons in the playroom

- Preparing and cleaning milk bottles
- Preparing and feeding fruit to the babies
- Cleaning sleep cages and washing bedding
- Working in the feed room to distribute food to the older baboons
- Monitoring interactions within different troops
- Cleaning baby cages at the end of the day
- Cleaning and maintenance of the sanctuary
- Refilling water
We favour individuals that have experience in dealing with animals, are comfortable in a harsh environment, and have a love of nature. Caring for animals requires patience, compassion, and a calm demeanour. The physical aspects are not overly challenging, but a reasonable level of fitness is recommended as the centre is built on a slope, and the summer weather is extremely humid. A positive attitude, willingness to help and learn, and a sense of humour are essential – volunteers should expect to be dirty and exhausted by the end of the day!
C.A.R.E. is run in a spirit of co-operation between everyone present, and all are expected to give their best at all times. We acknowledge that you are not an expert in this field, and require that you heed the advice given to you for your own safety and that of the animals. The animals needs take priority irrespective of the day or hour. Working hours depend on the emergencies that arise.
At C.A.R.E. we do not offer a luxury holiday experience. We have a unique facility and those committed to working with us will have the opportunity to observe and interact with one of man’s closest and often misunderstood relatives.
