Costs

Volunteers are accepted for a minimum of 4 weeks to a maximum of 12 weeks.

4 weeks – $1,800. Extra weeks are pro-rata.

This includes transfers to and from Phalaborwa, food, accomodation and a contribution to CARE. Flights to and from South Africa are NOT included. Please budget extra spending money for personal items (curios, alcohol, sweets, toiletries), excursions at CARE and pre and post travel.

We reserve the right to give notice to any volunteer should we deem them unsuitable, or their attitude be counterproductive to the team. Volunteers are required to sign an indemnity form acknowledging and accepting the consequences of working in close contact with wild animals. Volunteers are responsible for their own insurance and medical costs. Applicants must be over 18 years old.

Transport

You are responsible for your own arrangements to get to Johannesburg and on to Phalaborwa. CARE will collect you from either the Phalaborwa airport or the bus drop off point. Phalaborwa is 550 kms from Johannesburg, and is adjacent to the Kruger National Park.

  •  By plane – Johannesburg to Phalaborwa:

South African Airways flights leave from the domestic terminal at Johannesburg International (JNB). Also called O R Tambo International. The flight is ±1hour, 15 mins. Timetables subject to change, please check with your travel agent, or see www.flysaa.com  Change the home page to reflect your country of origin to get payment details in your local currency. The earlier you book, the cheaper it is. Cost each way varies between aprox $120 – $200 depending on availability. 

  • By bus Johannesburg to Phalaborwa:

Buses leave from the Johannesburg railway station (Park Station) ± 25kms from the airport. To get to the station you will need to catch a taxi, cost ± R250 (check before you get in). Travel time to Park Station 30 – 45 minutes depending on traffic.

 Translux Buses leave every day at 09h30 –arriving in Phalaborwa at 16h50.
